BENEFICIARIES: Lending Hearts supports children and
young adults both in treatment and in remission from cancer
and their families throughout the entire region.
MISSION: Providing emotional and social support to
children and young adults with cancer and their families
through unique activities and community outreach.
KEY EVENTS/INITIATIVES: On Sun., Oct. 5,
Lending Hearts will host the kite flying event in Pittsburgh,
“Kites Take Flight for Childhood Cancer” at Highmark Stadium
at 1 p.m. This annual event will raise awareness of children and
young adults diagnosed with cancer. The third annual Lending
Hearts Gala will take place Thurs., Feb. 27, 2015 at LeMont
Restaurant. Honorary Chairman, Dr. Stanley Marks, MD and
ESPN NFL Analyst Merril Hoge, will present the 2015 Lending
Hearts Friend Award to this year’s honoree, former Pittsburgh
Steeler, Aaron Smith.

BENEFICIARIES: One in seven adults struggle with low
literacy skills. GPLC students become better workers, parents
and neighbors, transforming their lives and strengthening our
MISSION: We help adults and families acquire reading,
writing, math, English language, workforce skills and computer
skills so they may reach their fullest potential in life. With your
support, adult students enroll in job training, earn promotions,
help their own children in school and provide a secure future
for their families.
KEY EVENTS/INITIATIVES: GPLC provides classroom instruction led by professional staff at our teaching center
in downtown Pittsburgh. Primary services include GED preparation and workplace skills development. Many students at our
center are refugees and must learn English and American
culture quickly to get a job. In addition, each year, more than
400 volunteers tutor adults in their community. Volunteers in
the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program help children
develop reading skills and a love of learning.
