BENEFICIARIES: United Way of Allegheny County’s work
helps struggling children and youth, seniors, individuals with
disabilities and financially disadvantaged families. One of its
newest initiatives, United for Women, supports women who’ve
recently experienced an unexpected crisis and need financial
MISSION: United Way of Allegheny County is a change
agent and efficient community fundraiser that improves lives
by addressing critical community needs. By convening diverse
partners and investing in programs and people to advance
solutions, United Way creates long-lasting change and helps
children and youth succeed, strengthens and supports families
by providing financial stability, ensures the safety and well-being of vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities and
provides county-wide access to information and referral
sources meeting basic needs.
KEY EVENTS/INITIATIVES: United Way of
Allegheny encourages the community to give, advocate,
volunteer and make an impact. There are many ways to support
the impactful work of United Way, through financial donations,
serving as a change agent for vulnerable citizens or volunteering to help neighbors in need.

BENEFICIARIES: More than 180 college mentors from
five college chapters are empowering over 600 girls at 34
program sites from 19 neighborhoods throughout Allegheny
MISSION: The mission of Strong Women, Strong Girls is to
raise ambition for women and girls by fostering cycles of mutual
empowerment. Through this mission, we counter the social
pressures that discourage at-risk girls by combining
multigenerational and group mentoring. We utilize lessons
learned from strong women throughout history to encourage
young girls to become strong women themselves.
KEY EVENTS/INITIATIVES: Each year, Strong
Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) hosts several events to celebrate
our Professional Mentors, College Mentors and most importantly, our girls. In our 2014-2015 program year, be sure to
celebrate with us at one of the following events: Oct. 9, 2014:
Strong Leaders Match Event; Jan. 24, 2015: Spring Volunteer &
Mentor Training; March 28, 2015: Jump Into Spring Event; and
April 21, 2015: Strong Awards Recognition Event.
GET INVOLVED: Volunteers are critical to furthering
the mission of Strong Women, Strong Girls. SWSG programming depends on dozens of adult volunteers who serve in three
key roles: Site Monitors, Event Volunteers, and Professional
STRONG GIRLS INC.
