To me, September always has felt like the beginning of the year — much more so than Jan. 1. Going back to school represents a new beginning in a more concrete way than a random date or holiday on a calendar — new notebooks, sharp pencils, first-day
nerves and a fresh start. I always have defined September as
my back-to-school month, even in the many years since my
school days ended — apparently, decades of back-to-school
moments leave their mark.
This year, back-to-school will take on new meaning as
my daughter trades high school for college. It is the next
sequence for many high school students like her who face
important decisions as they teeter on the edge of adulthood.
Pittsburgh Magazine has for many years aimed the spotlight
on our region’s colleges and universities in this issue. This
year, we offer additional resources to parents and students in the form of a beefed-up College Guide
(beginning on page 139) that is packed with advice and information from many of our region’s great
institutions of higher learning. We hope it is helpful if you or a loved one is headed back to school this
month — or perhaps just looking for a new beginning.
